Announcements, summarised

Announcements for the late-night trawler of the internet:

1. GEMS money collection tomorrow
2. SAR forms
3. Sabbaticals indemnity forms
4. EMR
5. GIRO

I have intentionally left out all the details in this terribly skimpy message. Check the egroups for details.

Nice Poem

Hello People, a nice poem over here. Please do enjoy!

One Art

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

---Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

Baking for sabbaticals and GEMS

havent blogged for quite some time... after all, i dont have "blog" test.

anyway, being very enthusiastic abt my cooking and baking course for sabbaticals, i went isp to check out the details. good news and bad news. good news: mrs tham is teacher in charge plus transport provided to the venue. bad news: vendor and venue is exactly the same as that for gems...

the items that we are going to bake during sabbaticals:
Puff Pastry, Siew Mai, Apple Strudel, Soon Kueh, Durian Strudel, Durian/Mango Pudding, Curry Puff, Mini Fruit Tart, Oreo CHEESE Cake.. baking for two days from morning till afternoon.. i think we are most likely gonna bake one of these things during gems... which means i'll probably be learning and baking something twice... how *exciting*.....

was comtemplating whether i should go for gems.. tried finding out from JL whether gems is compulsory. he ended up explaining using functions and limits:

"if GEMS is a function of E, and whereby the degree which students are encouraged may be represented by E, then as E --> infinity, GEMS tends towards compulsory. "

and he also explained using chemistry terms: "in other words, it is pseudo-compulsory"

on second thought, how can the welfare rep not go for class activities? plus JL said class might be going for lunch together... aiyo for the sake of the class welfare, i had to oblige and go for gems (bye bye $15). oh well hopefully i can learn to bake well during sabbaticals... in the event that i end up bringing home burnt cakes during sabbaticals, at least i can start all over again during gems haha... but i dont think i will screw up that badly.

anyway, i guess after learning the baking stuff during sabbaticals, i can help the class (read: the guys) during gems. haha

all right shall end here. havent stayed up so late before... do try to slack some more these few days before lessons start proper in week 3... :)

oh btw, what happens when the welfare rep agrees to go for gems??
"(Barney pops up beside you and gives you a hug)"

go figure who said that...

28 June 2008: Joel's outing

Sigh today's outing was not supposed to be too interesting since it's at a not-so-densely-populated Tiong Bahru (can tell from the way the cinema was less than a quarter full and that I managed to buy a row of 7 tickets less than 20mins before the movie) and there were only 7 people... but nevertheless still had a lot of fun...

To start off, well those who turned up originally were Mui Suan (1st time so late), Hui Min, Yuqun, me and of course Joel. So we were "forced" to look for more people who may want to come... and so it turned out, Jia Jun, who "had no money", promptly agreed to turn up as fast as possible after I promised to "subsidize" his movie ticket, tsk tsk, money-face... But it turned out that his mum gave him money after she knew about it, so I only needed to pay my own share haha=P

Sean came only just in time for the movie, cos he was busy showing off his talents at that Brands sudoku challenge... heard that he's already guranteed $100, nice 1... but he sort of cancelled that out, after he got tempted by me to stick his entire right arm into the hole at the armrest which was used to hold your drinks in the cinema... because his elbow got stuck at the wrong seat for about 10mins and if not for Yuqun who donated some of his precious drinking water onto his arm Sean would be watching the movie with his arm stuck there... Btw I got my arm out after I did that haha...

Oh yes, then Jia Jun "lost" his handphone right before the movie started... turns out that his phone slipped onto his seat, and when he stood up, the seat folded in and his phone dropped to the floor right under his seat... Ai ya ya... so much drama even before the movie started...

And before I forget, somebody by the name of Jeremy Lim attempted to "spoil our mood" by smsing us about GEMS moments before the movie started... sigh... and what's more, he sent an additional sms to Mui Suan to tell her to inform everyone around her... And so, here comes the lemma (by someone, i forgot who, was it Yuqun again?): "Mui Suan is Jeremy's loudspeaker." OOO...

On to the movie. It was really funny, and what's more interesting was that it seemed to be exactly what we were talking about our birthday boy Joel! The panda sitting onto the evil leopard, the leopard rebounding off the panda's tummy when it leaped at the panda (btw the panda didn't even move, tells us a lot about its MASS), and that the panda was really FAT made us wonder if the producer actually knew Joel or that Joel wanted to watch that movie because he already knew the storyline was going to be about him. So we were howling in laughter while drawing comparisons with Joel haha...

Then after Thursday's "unfortunate" event, Yuqun suggested if those things about me going out with "a-certain-very-important-person-in-my-life" but joined by "a-certain-someone-ELSE-that-shouldn't-be-following-and-can't-seem-to-control-his/her-mouth" then the entire "minus 448.6 degrees Farenheit" can tag along (or anyone else interested) and take turns to rebut snide remarks with even better ones... can imagine how it would be like...

Got some pics, but my com's screwed up, so can't upload... please bug yuqun for them... thanks...

PS. SHARP ears and eyes can be complemented with BLUNT comments. Just a pun, haha.

Joel's outing

Ok, 1st, details of tomorrow's outing:

Venue: Tiong Bahru MRT
Time: 11am
Attire: Anything from hwachong blazers to wearing your pants inside and jsut about anything else, so long you won't suffer when we watch movie...
Schedule: Eat lunch 1st, then watch kung-fu panda or do something else... movie is at 1.40pm, so... ya...

And then, I always have to clarify c-box stuff...

1) As fightfish says (under popular demand that I call him fightfish), i did 2 or because like I said I'm an absolute slacker and i didn't mug much... and i did see the questions, sounded a bit cheem... besides i don't write fast, so it was safer to do question 2 or... but no diff la, didn't finish in any case...

2) Rubiks Revolution is available in Singapore, so you guys can, er, buy it yourself... and hopefully, some kind volunteer who is interested can buy 1 and lemme see if it's worth buying... cos i got turned off the moment i knew it was a computer game...

Shall not nag too much about Euro 2008... nevertheless Spain won, so now my dad owes me 13 pizzas... yum yum... by the way, channel 5 may have live telecast of final (the always-so-lucky Germans VS the always-so-unlucky Spainards) on 30 June 2.45am, anyone watching? In any case it's CT session after the game, you can always catch some sleep then...

Block Test Day 4

BLOCKS ARE OVER!!! Before we enjoy what is left of our not-really-existent vacation, let us sit back and laugh at the 16 poor souls from 7B who have bio test after sunrise… Though I think by this time you read this, most of you have nothing much to laugh about liao… And please don’t kill me 7B, I dowan to organize ANOTHER SMTP outing…

And before I start waffling about Thursday (since it’s actually Friday now), some little things should be clarified/commented on before my com hangs on me again and makes me retype my whole post for the 4th time…

1) YES Mui Suan, because I am an absolute slacker, and that blogging doesn’t take so much time these days (except for the post with the Russian green humanoid look-alike pictures), I can afford to blog every day… Also, like Zhe Wei said, it's a "blog" test... which may explain why I didn’t finish my test paper for physics, chem. And maths…

2) “Mugger” crocodile is just a kind of crocodile that is called “mugger” for some reason, and has nothing to do with intensive and repetitive studying of notes and worksheets or anything to do with improving intelligence…

3) Like our lovely welfare rep says, GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT IS IMPORTANT IN TESTS… (holy I’m shocked, she’s caring not only for Jeremy’s welfare, it must be the 爱屋及乌 effect HAHA) And from the fact that we left plenty of blanks in our test papers (or at least I did), I foresee that our tutors are going to give us hell about time management until the promos are over…

4) And like Mui Suan said (again), “block” tests are meant to “block” you from getting promoted to J2 (contrary to what the school has said of course haha), while “promos” are meant to “promote” you to J2 by hook or by crook… Better not let Mrs Tham see this, else she’ll insist the whole class gets an A for chem EOY. What to do, we are 6Kers, life is tough…

5) Yes Hognaes, glad that you finally realized… told you to take a leaf out KM’s, er, plant… oh oops, I meant Jian Hua…

6) Due to the fact that I had some decently important stuff to do this afternoon after chem test, I didn’t blog… Want the details? Ask me personally. But spread it around, and you’ll be deader than meeting Mrs Tham after getting U for chem test…

7) Sigh can’t help but agree with Jia Jun. I really miss those days where I can sleep for 45% of the duration of the maths paper and still get full marks…

8) O yes SMTP outing… Er it may be sorta hard for you geniuses, but can we treat it like we all got dementia? Means we sort of… let it slip out of our minds… and don't let it come back in... can? Zhe Wei and I will appreciate it a lot, thanks =)

Ok shall start waffling (or pizza-ing) about our last day of blocks…

Woke up to hear that Germany won Turkey. They barely deserved it I guess, but since I was hating the Turks for their turkey-sized back-from-the-dead victories, well… upped my mood a bit I guess… but the most important thing was that I won another 5 pizzas from my dad… Hope Spain doesn’t fail me later, then I’ll be really FAT after my dad repays his pizza debt… it stands at 8 pizzas now…

A half-eaten breakfast, half-eaten lunch, 4.5 hours, some mugging and a dad’s quick ride later, I was back in school for the last paper… my nightmares were starting again…

Blasted MCQ. Shaded in the last answer just as I had to stop, thank god. Barely finished, no thanks to those calculating stuff. So calculative. ARGH. Lucky a lot of qualitative qns at the back… Speaking of MCQ, the invigilator called Mui Suan “Jian Hua”. WELL WELL, wonder if we should call her Miss/Mrs Jeremy Lim or Miss Tay… haha no offence Mui Suan…

Wasn’t so lucky for Paper 2 though, sigh… got stuck at 1 calculating qn, ended up rushing thru section B, and barely 7 mins left for question 2. Thrashed it out all the way to 2b, but with less than 3 minutes left, I can’t possibly do that silly 6-line stoichiometry rubbish. Thankfully, 2d was like this: “what is the difference between and ideal gas and a real gas?” Ah, I know that one…

As for what I did after the test, shan’t reveal too much… or I should say, I shall not reveal it at all… cos… it wasn’t too pleasant… but you can always bug me if you want to know…

Meanwhile, on the EMB… “There will be no Rocket Launch (Grading) tomorrow Friday (27th June 08) as I have invigilation duties tomorrow and a meeting with MOE, IDA, TEE in the afternoon. My apologies. The Rocket Launch will be postponed to next week (most likely) during the enrichment slot on Thurs.” Man, there wasn’t a need for the apology, nor was there a need for the reason… Mrs Loh is just such a nice teacher… Should vote her for “best physics teacher” award if I get the chance… Now I can go out on Friday hehheh…

But there’s 1 bit… “I hope you have tried your best for this Block Test. Do not fret over the results as there is little you can do anything about it. You may rethink and reevaluate what can be done to improve for subsequent tests however.” Yea yea yea, no need to fret, ONLY 21 marks worth of blanks, still got chance for A… SIGH…

And then… “Students (inclusive of MOP students) who have been selected for this training, please attend lessons on every Thursday from 545pm to 715pm. It will start in week 3 - Term 3 - 10th July 2008 at Musics LT. Please be punctual for all lessons and
remember to sign on the attendance list for every lesson. There maybe make-up lessons during one-week-school (Sept) holiday.” WHATTHEHOLY… SHIT. The journey home shall be dangerous, there’s no sunlight…

Oh yes, and 1 more thing, I’m not supposed to do this (or face the wrath of my mum), but oh well… Anyone who is desperately in love with rubik’s cubes and the like and would wish to get something that is certainly not available in Singapore, I can try to help you look for what you want when I go England… just remember to pay me when I buy for you…

Yea should be all, hopefully the next post is about class outing… or I should call it “Joel’s outing”… and yes, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOEL!

Block Test Day 3

Hey 6K let me tell you something (if you guys are interested that is). I HATE Maths. Right to the core. At least it's true for the government syllabus...

Now I know why they gave 3 hours for maths. It's because of the stupid aircon and that sickening Maclaurin series. Should have done a Yongquan and brought 6 packets of tissue paper if I had known earlier. Then I would have finished the whole paper with 30+mins to spare and not left blanks instead. And the invigilator must have thought that I was some kind of disgusting guy, wiping his nose with all the mucus coming out onto his pants (NB: I mean I was FORCED to wipe my nose with my hand and wipe my hand on my pants, not wipe my nose directly onto my pants, that's a lot worse, and I was also NOT wiping my nose while all the mucus dripped onto my pants, that's EVEN WORSE) and pulling his nose so hard as if trying to tear it out... I wish I could, then I wouldn't be so miserable... And I heard I wasn't the only one who suffered... Someone used up A WHOLE TISSUE BOX within the 1st 2 days of exam...

And more importantly, the bloody cold almost screwed me up totally... how do you solve 100a^2-120a < 0? Answer: 0< a <(5/6). Plugged in a=1 into the GC to check, saw that it was supposed to be within the range, then realized the answer was 0< a <(6/5). Smart SMART SMART me.

And as if it wasn't bad enough, then came the blasted Maclaurin shit. 3rd derivative? What the F, go hell la. Can't simplify a bloody shit for the 1st 2 derivatives at all, how to find? Ended up skipping the question... In the end decided to come back to it and thrash it out... and in the process doing quotient rule for a fraction with a square root in its denominator... MORE THAN ONCE. And like it wasn't sickening enough, all but 2 terms had numerators that were multiples of x. And what do you do in Maclaurin series? x=0, isn't it?

And guess what? the last 2 terms were integral multiples of derivatives (to be exact, 1 and 2), and the right hand side was zero. And looking back at the question, ln y = cos^-1 2x. WHAT THE HELL IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE QUESTION SETTERS?!?! ARGH...

Never mind, enough of all this crap (crap refers to maths, not my blog post), enjoy the picture of Hulky Bulky Arshavin, but don't forget to mug chem... MUST MUG HARD, else Mrs Tham will complain we score too low again (Actually not that low also right, class average A leh)... And CHEM rep all the more must mug CHEM, else CHEM tutor may pour hot CAMP-bells soup on CHEM rep and tell CHEM rep's father-mother-sister-brother-uncle-nephew-niece to force CHEM rep to CAMP in CAM-bridge to mug CHEM, so see ya... for now...

Block Test Day 2

4 words. A very bad day.

GP essay 1st... entertaining teacher invigilator, didn't have a teacher that was willing to talk so much during exams for a very long time already... and nice questions he asked too: "What do you dislike/fear in GP?" HMMMMMMM I WONDER...

12 questions. All duno how to do. Never mind, pick 1 and start inventing... at least still had time to rest my already very painful right hand... wasn't so lucky for the compre though...

So it came. The same old stuff. Summary was tough as usual. AQ anyhow... but i heard Zhe Wei wrote a very interesting point: "If the writer claims that writing in short-form should be promoted, then why is he writing this passage in proper english?" Nice one...

Then the blasted physics paper. Siao 1, anyone managed to finish? I lost 21 marks from blanks already... Stupid gravitation, 2 whole pages of verbal diarrhoea and data, then still need to calculate all those 10^24 or 10^-11 crap, waste my time... ended up without enough time for Section B, stupid me... Seriously hate physics sia... Maybe I'll treat the whole class to pizza if I get A...

At least tomorrow is maths, so I shall mug chem... in fact, everyone from 08S6K should... Maths test? What maths test? Need to study one meh? Anyhow flip flip can liao what haha...

Oh yes, I need to rest my hand after all that frenzying in physics...

But before that, wanna tell everyone, Joel's birthday is THIS FRIDAY! Anyone in for a movie or something? Kung Fu panda? Maybe not Incredible Hulk...

Watched it already, it's a visual nightmare, made me giddy and blind after watching it... Or maybe that's cos I was sitting in the 4th row... Yea so not that... but... how about... Incredible Arshavin instead?

They're really alike...

See what I mean?

And he's incredible enough... beating Holland... Sweden... I hope they don't beat Spain though...

And 1 more thing, we go Dutch haha...

Jackie

Block Test Day 1

The day started well actually, after learning that Spain beat Italy 4-2 on penalties...

Then after 1 whole morning of mugging... the test...

Case study. As usual. Not so stumped, but still stumped. Should I draw a natural monopoly diagram? Will demand rise or fall? Headache...

Essay. Even worse. You know, it's just... almost-impossible-to-write-while-you-think-and-think-while-you-write-and-still-write-long-enough-and-good-enough-to-get-a-decent-grade-because-for-you-to-do-that-you-need-to-write-non-stop-while-thinking-non-stop-and-think-non-stop-while-writing-non-stop-and-your-brain-has-only-2-halves-and-part-of-it-is-already-used-to-register-the-increasing-pain-in-your-writing-hand-due-to-all-the-mad-writing-speeds-and-the-brain-is-also-hurting-itself-by-trying-to-think-so-hard-and-write-so-much-at-the-same-time. Yes, all in 1 breath. But I think some people may be worse off. Just ask Jia Jun and Mister IQ-not-that-high-but-still-in-SMTP Howard Chiu...

Then went home intending to revise physics and read a little GP. Ended up slacking. Crap. Then read EMB, saw a message titled "I LOVE my English Teacher Award". LOVE with 4 capital letters. I stoned for a while, then closed the internet window and shut the computer down and went to mug. What... decadence...

Anyway, good luck for GP and physics, er, later today, but dun think any of you will get to read this until both tests are over...

SMO 2nd round participants

Hi again... pleased to announce the list of 08S6Kers who got into SMO 2nd round... Btw these are all list A people, only 1 Hwachongian got into list B and he's from High School...

1) ME!!! Like duh HAHAHAHAHA
2) Yongquan
3) Hongxin
4) Shizhi
5) Xiaomin
6) Yuhan
7) Zhao Dan
8) Jianlin

And it looks like we own everyone else again, because only 3 other J1s from Hwachong got into 2nd round... and only 1 is not SMTP (shhh... and it seems to be a Singaporean, I'm shocked, mayb he cheated) haha...

As your those poor souls who nearly made it (ie. Zhe Wei et al.), you should be guranteed a bronze (hopefully) for your efforts... and you have 1 more chance next year, unlike poor me, last chance to... get into National Team... I should probably end up with a silver again... crap I just can't do those "SILLY" questions...

Oh I almost forgot, the details of 2nd round...

Date: 5 July 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 9am to 1.30pm (Yes you didn't read wrongly, it's 4.5 hours)
Venue: NUS LT 25
IMPORTANT: Bring identification pass, and be there by 8.30 (damn so early)...

And what the hell, no geometrical instruments are allowed... hope they change that, I'll die without accurately-scaled diagrams...

Holidays

Got bored again after being slightly productive (I made my PIP rocket)... so I'm talking again... in a desperate attempt to keep this place slightly more alive... since everyone's behaving as if we were back in late Triassic times ie. oxygen level around only 10%...

So I was wondering what are the largest (confirmed) differences between holidays and schooling days...

1) No flag-raising (I'm not sure if the flags are there though)
2) Canteen is closed (only canteen, poolside not counted)
3) Gates are USUALLY closed
4) No mass lectures

And some are out...

1) No tutorials (wait long then will happen)
2) Teachers don't come school (I hope will happen)
3) We don't follow timetable (Excluding mass lectures, YOU NEVER KNOW...)
4) Students don't mug...
5) It is quieter in school...

So... When someone comes to school, it takes a really good eye to spot whether it is the holidays or not... SIGH...

Emoing again

OK... I wanted to blog, but didn't really have the mood... never mind, shall blog anyway...

Sigh, Sunday night was a night of mixed emotions... Concert was a success, but it ended just like that... the effort was worth it of course, but it just felt so short... And the end of the performance meant that the seniors were leaving, and every 1 of them wrote very nice letters to us, really touched by those, and real sad that they had to leave... Now I'll end up as Erhu II leader again, 1 of the toughest jobs in Xianyue Section...

Then SIMO camp ended on wednesday, was happy of course, but it meant that I don't get to play soccer and basketball like mad again...

So, I found some free time on wednesday evening and night, and starting thinking about all sorts of stuff again... things like the nice people I have met recently, as well as the assholes, those faint memories of the concert (really loved the pieces), the words on the letters I received from my erhu seniors, things like that...

And then, it went on to the regrets... like screwing up SMO, my SIMC poster, the fact that I had to crash national team to not be in senior team, and not practicing enough... and of course, the worries about homework and block tests, should I do tutorials, should I mug notes or should I... I duno, a lot of stuff... So I ended up renewing a very old hobby of mine: mugging about dinosaurs... well, to be exact, I didn't find dinosaur books, but I didn't mind geological history, about how life evolved, and how it was related to changes in oxygen levels and things like that... then I realized I wasn't being productive. SHIT.

In any case I found it really enjoyable to talk on MSN with my erhu seniors... It's really strange why I added them only after I won't get to see that that often anymore and didn't ask them when they were around... O well, some people are like that... I'm 1 of them...

That's all, shall try to finish my book ASAP and I'll start mugging... That book's really informative, better than most of the dinosaur books I have read...

An emo-ing Jackie
